Sector 42

http://www.box.com/s/ivb4lctik3p457e41562

Sector 42 is a scrolling shooter akin to Galaga, with waves of enemies that spawn procdeurally, and weapon powerups of different varieties.

Probably the most fun part of making Sector 42 was creating the pseudo-retro look and feel of the game, with the monochrome pixelated graphics, yet smooth particle and blur effects. The only thing that I did not make myself was the music, which I had a friend synthesize for me (the tracks are pretty rocking, too ^.^)

Although I must say, through learning Sector 42, I learned that truly engrossing gameplay doesn't come cheap. The levels were easy to design formulas for, but I always found the gameplay lacking something.

Nevertheless, it's still pretty fun, if I may say to myself.

Forgotten

Forgotten was a game I started for a game design competition hosted by Yoyogames.com a couple of years ago. I never finished the game, but it was a fabulous exercise in the creation and design of an RPG. I planned out and fleshed out the stats and abilities system before coding any of it, and the specialization trees are all interesting.

The inventory and skill tree modules were both logistically and conceptually difficult to design, but it was a very fulfilling experience and I came up with some reusable paradigms for games that I like to employ where they are relevant.

Boxob Redux

Boxob was a puzzle game I made a while ago. It was based on a puzzle in a temple in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons in which switches slid a row of statues, and you had to line the statues up with the pattern on the floor.

From making Boxob I learned that A puzzle game is probably one of the easiest genres of games to program, but the hardest to balance the difficulty curve of. Puzzle games also present the unique dilemma of originality-- that is, a puzzle game is really nothing without an incredibly original concept; the execution is almost secondary.

I found that boxob by nature was very hard to design tutorials for, and everyone who I had play it said it was too difficult. Even after remaking all the levels and dubbing it "Boxob Redux," I got the same feedback. I will say however that it is a very mentally stimulating game, and even I play it from time to time when I'm craving a challenge!
